New Employee Benefits Enrollment

Benefit Enrollment Tips for New Employees

  • Employees must be hired in Workday with the benefits onboarding questions triggered to the employee, and answered, in order to make the benefits enrollment tasks available to the employee in Workday. An Onboarding job aid and reference guide are located in Workday Help within the Education section.
  • Employees have 31 days from the date of hire to make a selection. Here are some options on when employees can begin coverage:
    • Elect coverage for employee and dependents to start on hire/initial eligibility date if they enroll before, on, or within seven days after hire/initial eligibility date*.
    • Elect for coverage to begin on the first of the month following hire/initial eligibility if the employee enrolls before the end of the month of hire/initial eligibility*.
    • If enrollment is beyond the seventh day after the hire/ initial eligibility date, but during the  31 day enrollment period, coverage will start on the employer contribution eligibility date (the first of the month after the employees 60th day of employment).
  • *Employees will pay the total monthly premium if they elect benefits to start before employer contribution eligibility date.
  • All benefits-eligible employees have a waiting period for the employer contribution (SGIP) when they begin employment with Texas A&M University. Individuals transferring with no break in service from another Texas state agency or institution of public higher education have already met this requirement.
  • The employer contribution will begin on the first of the month after the 60th day of employment in a benefits-eligible position.
  • Employees will indicate their desired benefit start date in Workday. If they are not fully hired in Workday and have not completed their selection within their designated time frame (7 days for hire, end of the month for 1st of the next month), the coverage start date will be defaulted to the 1st of the month following 60 days of employment.
  • The table below is provided by System Benefits Administration to help determine SGIP eligibility for those employees who are subject to the waiting period.
