AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH TECHNICIAN I

SUMMARY

General Description:  Performs agricultural field laboratory and/or greenhouse research activities and assists in supervising the operation of equipment and personnel involved in agricultural operations.

DUTIES

Typical:  Plants, maintains, and keeps accurate records of agronomic grain crops, turf, ornamentals, and other plants being studied in a research project; feeds, treats, and cares for experimental animals; supervises and keeps records of crossing of plant materials for breeding projects; harvests agronomic crops turf, and other research field plots and records yield and other pertinent information; assists senior staff members in conducting major field experiments, carrying out assigned duties without supervision, but consults with supervisor as necessary in developing or following procedures; operates and maintains equipment and instruments in engineering, soils, crops, or animal research; makes routine inspections of fields to determine requirements for irrigating, mowing, fertilizing, cultivating, and pest control; supervises or makes field applications of experimental treatments to experimental sites; supervises field laboratory and/or greenhouse operations according to direction specified by project leader; performs related duties as required.

SUPERVISION

Received:  General instruction and periodic review from project leader.
Given:  Detailed initial instruction to and frequent review of other personnel and part-time Student Workers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:  High school graduation supplemented by college course work in agriculture or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Three years in farm work.
Preferred:   Additional experience in research work and supervision
