ANIMAL CARETAKER II

SUMMARY

General Description:  Provides responsible care for experimental animals and related facilities.

DUTIES

Typical:  Identifies animals; observes and makes records of hospitalized animals' appetites and excrements; observes animals to report needs for special attention; recognizes subtle differences in animal behavior and appearance; receives and implements special care and special diet for certain animals; bathes, dips and grooms animals; prepares basic animal food; feeds and waters animals; cleans and disinfects animal housing facilities and feeding equipment; operates and maintains mechanical equipment; disposes of animals and carcasses in prescribed manner when directed; performs related duties as required.

SUPERVISION

Received:  General instruction and periodic review from Animal Caretaker Supervisor, Animal Clinic Supervisor or other supervisor.
Given:  None.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:  Ability to comprehend instructions. Two years in related work.
Preferred:  High school graduation or equivalent (GED). Experience in animal handling or animal care.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATION

Required:  None.
Preferred:  None.

EQUIPMENT

Typical:  Use of wet/dry vacuum cleaner, blower/dryer, meat grinder, pressure washer, front-end loader, tractor, power sweeper, fork lift, dump truck, and manure spreader.
