SUMMARY

General Description:  Primary contact for all telephone and radio communications from the general public and the transit operators by handling routine and emergency calls in addition to requests for service and providing information and solutions in response to customer complaints. Serve as stand-by driver as needed.

DUTIES

Typical:  Serve as the primary contact for all telephone and radio communications from the public and transit operators. Maintain a computerized log of all incoming phone calls and radio transmissions by date, time and action taken. Handle routine and emergency calls in addition to request for service. Provide information and solutions in response to customer complaints. Routinely use two-way radio system to communicate with drivers and must maintain constant control and awareness of transit operations on the streets. Ensure daily transit driver schedule is complete, coordinate activities during the day in accordance with that schedule and ensure that drivers have arrived at their scheduled time. Fill open shifts by contacting other available drivers. Ensure that the proper equipment is assigned to the correct route(s). Must be well versed in policy and procedure, routes, equipment and computer programs used in the transit operation. Provide accident notification to department management. Record policy infractions and report them to supervisors. Coordinate daily paratransit schedule and make changes as required. Coordinate re-routes as required. Responsible for entering time worked, reading and responding to e-mail, requesting leave, and reviewing/reading information listed on the department intranet. These duties will require the use of a computer and monitor. Dispatchers also assign stand-by and extra drivers to routes as needed. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

Received:  General instruction and periodic review from administrative supervisor.
Given:  May train and/or supervise newly employed Transit Dispatcher and student employees as directed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:  High school graduation or any equivalent combination of training & experience. Two years full-time employment or military service.
Preferred:  Vocational or college courses in mass communications. Previous experience as a dispatcher in law enforcement/911 service.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATION

Required:  None.
Preferred:  None.

EQUIPMENT

Typical:  Use of standard office equipment and personal computers.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Typical:  Working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing.
