COMMUNICATIONS CENTER DISPATCHER II

SUMMARY

General Description:  Answers calls regarding unscheduled and emergency maintenance issues; monitors the campus-wide system for fire, intrusion and mechanical failure alarms and contacts the appropriate personnel; and provides directory assistance.

DUTIES

Typical:  Trains new Communications Center Dispatchers; provides assistance to Communications Center Dispatchers in the absence of the supervisor and assistant supervisor; plans and schedules workload; directs the operation of the central switchboard or communications control center for the shift; coordinates Communication Center time sheets, personnel leave and other necessary paperwork for the office; receives incoming telephone calls on maintenance issues for the campus; monitors campus-wide system for fire, intrusion, and mechanical failure alarms; takes appropriate action to include contacting the ambulance, police, Environmental Health & Safety, building or maintenance personnel; reports accidents and unsafe working conditions; uses proper personal protective equipment; follows safety procedures outlined in the Material Safety Data sheets; participates in safety training; ; follows the standard guidelines set forth in the Texas A&M University Fuel Gas Delivery Systems Management Plan; participates in skill development initiatives such as Combustible Gas Indicator training; maintains a working knowledge of Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code (NFPA 58) and 49 CFR 192; maintains office supply inventory; develops and maintains forms as needed for the Communications Center; updates Standard Operating Procedures as necessary; issues loaner two-way radios to University departments; issues temporary keys to personnel; represents the department to internal and external customers; handles incoming calls to the University as the campus operator; gives callers the appropriate number for a student, faculty or staff, or a department; transfers calls to the appropriate number when requested; performs related duties as required.

Received:  Detailed initial instruction and frequent review from Communications Center Assistant Supervisor and other administrative supervisors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:  High school graduation or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Twelve months experience with multi-line phones and/or radio dispatch.

EQUIPMENT

Typical:  Familiarity with radio and telephone equipment.
