Newspapers & Professional Journals
Newspapers
are by
far the most popular way to advertise an open position. An ad in a
metropolitan paper can be relatively expensive compared to local
papers. You may or may not catch the attention of potential
applicants with a single ad. Thus, you may have to consider running
the ad more than one time. Since top applicants may already be
working and not looking at the classified section, you may want to
consider a teaser ad in the sports or lifestyle section directing
the applicants to your detailed ad in the classified
section. (See the brochure "
Radio & Newspaper Recruitment Advertising
Options" for other contact information.)
Professional Journals
are an excellent way of advertising for industry
specific positions. The ad will usually have a longer life since the
readers will treat the journal like a magazine. Be sure to give
yourself ample time to place the ad since journals are usually
printed monthly or quarterly. Ads in journals are usually priced by
the page size, not by the number of words, which can allow you to
include additional information about the university and your
department. Because of their high price, these ads are generally
used for national searches or high-level positions. (See p. of
the "Build a Diverse Applicant
Pool with Effective Advertising" for links to
Newsletter/Journal Advertisement.)
